Discover Cameroon
Cameroon is often called "Africa in miniature" because within its borders you can find almost every type of landscape found across the continent β dense equatorial rainforests in the south, semi-arid savannah in the north, volcanic mountains in the west, and a long Atlantic coastline. Mount Cameroon, at 4,095 metres, is the highest peak in West and Central Africa and is an active volcano. The country is home to extraordinary biodiversity, including lowland gorillas and forest elephants.
Cameroon is a bilingual country β both French and English are official national languages β reflecting its colonial history as a territory divided between France and Britain. YaoundΓ© is the political capital, while Douala is the economic hub and largest city. The economy is one of the most diversified in sub-Saharan Africa, based on agriculture, oil, timber, and minerals. Cameroon is a major producer of cocoa, coffee, and bananas.
With a population of around 28 million people, Cameroon is extraordinarily diverse β with over 250 different ethnic groups and languages. This cultural richness is one of the country's greatest strengths. Cameroon is famous across Africa for its vibrant music, food, and above all, its passionate football culture β the Indomitable Lions are one of the most celebrated football teams on the continent.

Flag of Cameroon
Cameroon's flag features three equal vertical bands of green, red, and yellow β the Pan-African colours β with a yellow five-pointed star at the centre of the red band. The green represents the forests of the south, red symbolises unity, and yellow represents the savannah of the north.
The Indomitable Lions β Africa's First World Giants
Cameroon's debut at the 1982 World Cup in Spain was extraordinary β they went unbeaten through the group stage, drawing with Italy, Poland and Peru. Yet they were eliminated on goal difference without losing a match. It was a sign of things to come for African football, and a frustrating injustice that fuelled the Lions' hunger.
Eight years later in Italy, Cameroon announced themselves to the world in the most spectacular fashion. Opening the tournament by defeating the reigning champions Argentina 1-0, Roger Milla and his teammates stormed through the group stage. The veteran striker β who had come out of retirement aged 38 to play β danced to the corner flag after every goal, creating one of football's most iconic celebrations.
Cameroon defeated Colombia in the Round of 16 before meeting England in the quarter-final, fighting back from 2-1 down to level at 2-2 before Gary Lineker's penalty ended the dream in extra time. Africa had arrived on the world stage β and Cameroon had led the charge.
Samuel Eto'o later became Africa's greatest player of his generation, winning the African Player of the Year award four times and three Champions League titles. He remains Cameroon's all-time top scorer with 56 international goals.
