Discover the USA

The United States of America is the world's third largest country by area and the third most populous nation on Earth, with over 330 million people living across 50 states. It stretches from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west, from the Canadian border in the north to Mexico and the Gulf of Mexico in the south. The country's geographic diversity is extraordinary — from the frozen tundra of Alaska and the volcanic islands of Hawaii, to the Rocky Mountains, the Great Plains, the Appalachian Mountains, the vast deserts of the southwest, and the subtropical wetlands of Florida.

The USA is the world's largest economy and a global superpower in technology, finance, military, culture, and innovation. Silicon Valley in California is the birthplace of the internet age — companies like Apple, Google, Amazon, Facebook, and Tesla have transformed how the entire world lives, works, and communicates. Hollywood is the world's most influential film industry, and American music genres — jazz, blues, rock and roll, hip-hop — have shaped the soundtrack of the modern world.

With its founding values of liberty, democracy, and opportunity, the USA has attracted immigrants from every corner of the globe, making it one of the world's most diverse nations. American culture — fast food, blue jeans, pop music, cinema — is recognised in virtually every country on Earth. Football (soccer) has grown dramatically in popularity and the USA co-hosts the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico — the largest football tournament in history, with 48 teams.

Flag of the USA

The American flag — known as the Stars and Stripes — features 13 alternating red and white horizontal stripes representing the original 13 colonies, and a blue canton (rectangle) in the upper left corner containing 50 white stars representing the 50 states. The design has evolved over time as states joined the union, with the current 50-star version adopted in 1960 when Hawaii became a state.

⚽ The History of Football in the USA

Football has deep roots in American history — the USA finished third at the very first World Cup in 1930 and famously defeated England 1-0 at the 1950 World Cup in one of the sport's greatest upsets. But for most of the 20th century, American football, baseball, and basketball dominated the cultural landscape. The 1994 World Cup was a watershed moment: the USA hosted the most-attended FIFA World Cup in history, introducing the sport to millions of new fans and launching Major League Soccer the same year. MLS has grown from ten teams in 1996 to 29 clubs in 2024, becoming one of the world's most attended domestic leagues.

The men's team showed it could compete with the world's best at the 2002 World Cup — defeating Portugal 3-2, drawing with South Korea, and eliminating Mexico before a narrow quarter-final loss to Germany. Under a series of coaches, the team progressed through the 2010 and 2014 World Cups with round-of-16 finishes, but a shock failure to qualify for 2018 led to a reset that has produced an extraordinary generation of young talent.

The new golden generation arrived emphatically at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Christian Pulisic — first American to score in a World Cup knockout round — led a squad of young, technically excellent players through the round of 16 before losing to the Netherlands. With Pulisic now at AC Milan, Weston McKennie at Juventus, and Gio Reyna at Dortmund, the USMNT head into 2026 as potential dark horses. Hosting the tournament on home soil for the first time since 1994, the Stars and Stripes have everything to play for.

Joint all-time top scorer with Donovan on 57 goals. Played for Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur, becoming one of the first Americans to succeed in the Premier League. A warrior and a pioneer.
