Türkiye — officially the Republic of Türkiye — is a transcontinental country straddling both Europe and Asia. The European part (Thrace) accounts for only about 3% of the country's territory but includes Istanbul, one of the world's great cities. The Asian part (Anatolia) contains the vast majority of the country. Türkiye is the only country in the world that physically bridges two continents — connected by the Bosphorus Strait and the bridges that cross it in Istanbul.
Istanbul is one of history's most significant cities. Known in ancient times as Byzantium and then Constantinople, it served as the capital of the Byzantine Empire for over a thousand years and then as the capital of the Ottoman Empire for nearly 500 years. Today it is a megacity of 15 million people where East meets West — where ancient mosques stand beside Byzantine churches and modern skyscrapers, and where the call to prayer mingles with the sounds of the Bosphorus ferry traffic.
With a population of around 85 million people, Türkiye is one of the world's most important geopolitical nations — a NATO member and EU candidate country that sits at the crossroads of the Middle East, Europe, and Central Asia. It is a major producer of hazelnuts (providing 70% of global supply), textiles, and automobiles. Turkish cuisine — including döner kebab, baklava, and Turkish coffee — is one of the world's most beloved and globally exported food cultures. Football is a national passion, with Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe, and Beşiktaş among the most fanatical club followings in Europe.

Flag of Türkiye
Türkiye's flag features a red background with a white crescent moon and a white five-pointed star. The red and white design has been used in various forms since the Ottoman Empire. The crescent and star are traditional symbols of Islam and have been associated with the Ottoman and Turkish state for centuries. The flag is known in Turkish as the "Ay Yıldız" (Moon Star).
⚽ The History of Football in Türkiye
Football arrived in Türkiye in the late 19th century, introduced by British and Greek communities in Istanbul and İzmir. The sport initially faced some official resistance, but by the 1900s it had become popular across the Ottoman Empire. When the Turkish Republic was founded in 1923 by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the Turkish Football Federation was established in the same year — reflecting the importance of sport to the new nation.
The three great Istanbul clubs — Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe, and Beşiktaş — were all founded in the early 1900s and have dominated Turkish football ever since. Their rivalries are among the most passionate in world football, with Istanbul derbies regularly filling 50,000-seat stadiums with fervent supporters. Galatasaray made history in 2000 by winning the UEFA Cup and UEFA Super Cup in the same season — the first and still the only Turkish club to win a European trophy.
Türkiye's finest hour as a national team came at the 2002 FIFA World Cup in South Korea and Japan. Under coach Şenol Güneş, Türkiye powered through the tournament in electric fashion — beating South Korea in the third-place match with Hakan Şükür scoring after just 11 seconds, the fastest goal in World Cup history. That bronze medal remains Türkiye's greatest international achievement.
The modern era has brought a new generation of talent. Hakan Çalhanoğlu, the Inter Milan midfielder, is one of Europe's most technically complete players. Arda Güler, who signed for Real Madrid as a teenager, is one of the most exciting young talents in world football. At Euro 2024, Türkiye reached the quarter-finals, beating Austria and proving the country's growing football stature. The 2026 World Cup is firmly in their sights.
