Discover Iran
Iran — officially the Islamic Republic of Iran — is a country in Western Asia, bordered by Turkey, Iraq, the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the Persian Gulf. It is one of the world's oldest continuous civilisations, with a history stretching back over 3,000 years to the ancient Persian Empire, which was once the largest empire the world had ever seen. Iran is a land of extraordinary geographic diversity — from the Alborz and Zagros mountain ranges to vast salt deserts, lush Caspian forests, and Persian Gulf coastlines.
Iran is one of the world's most important energy producers, with the second largest natural gas reserves and the fourth largest oil reserves on the planet. Beyond energy, Iran has a sophisticated and diversified economy that includes agriculture, manufacturing, and technology. The country is one of the world's largest producers of pistachios, saffron, and carpets. Persian carpets are considered among the finest handmade artworks in the world and are exported globally.
With a population of around 88 million people, Iran is a young and highly educated nation — over 60% of university graduates are women. Persian (Farsi) is the official language and one of the world's great literary languages, with a rich tradition of poetry from legendary figures like Rumi and Hafez. Tehran, the capital, is one of the Middle East's most cosmopolitan cities. Iran has a passionate football culture and the national team, Team Melli, is one of Asia's most successful sides.

Flag of Iran
Iran's flag features three equal horizontal bands of green, white, and red. The green represents growth and fertility, white symbolises peace and honesty, and red represents bravery and martyrdom. A stylised emblem of a tulip (also representing Allah) appears at the centre, and the phrase "Allahu Akbar" (God is Greatest) is written 22 times along the borders of the green and red bands.
⚽ The History of Football in Iran
Football has been played in Iran since the early twentieth century, introduced by British workers at oil installations in the south of the country. The sport spread rapidly through schools, universities and the military, and Iran became one of Asia's early football powers. The Iran Football Federation was established in 1920, making it one of the oldest football associations in Asia.
Iran's golden era came in the 1960s and 1970s, when Team Melli dominated the AFC Asian Cup — winning three consecutive titles in 1968, 1972, and 1976. These were outstanding teams featuring some of the most technically gifted players in the continent, and they established Iran's reputation as one of Asia's great football nations.
On the world stage, Iran have been Asia's most consistent qualifiers — reaching seven FIFA World Cups, the most of any Asian team. At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Iran produced one of the tournament's most dramatic moments: 2-0 down to Wales with ten minutes remaining, they scored twice in stoppage time to win 2-0. The comeback sent their fans into delirium and showed Team Melli at their courageous best.
