The Democratic Republic of Congo is the second largest country in Africa and the eleventh largest in the world. It is home to the Congo Rainforest — the second largest tropical rainforest on Earth after the Amazon — which covers much of the country's vast interior. The Congo River, the world's deepest river and the second longest in Africa, flows through the heart of the country and is the lifeblood of millions of people who live along its banks.
The DRC is one of the most mineral-rich countries in the world, with vast deposits of cobalt, coltan, copper, gold, and diamonds. The country holds an estimated 70% of the world's cobalt reserves — a metal essential for electric vehicle batteries — making it strategically important for the global economy. Despite this extraordinary natural wealth, the DRC has faced significant challenges, and millions of its people continue to show remarkable resilience.
With a population of over 100 million people, the DRC is the most populous French-speaking country in the world. Kinshasa, the capital, sits on the Congo River and is one of Africa's largest cities with a vibrant culture of music, art, and sport. Congolese music — including the hugely influential genre known as soukous (Congolese rumba) — has shaped popular music across Africa and the world.

⚽ The History of Football in DR Congo
Football in DR Congo — formerly Zaire and before that the Belgian Congo — has roots stretching back to the Belgian colonial era of the early 20th century. The game spread rapidly across the vast nation, finding particular intensity in the capital Kinshasa and the mining cities of Katanga. The Fédération Congolaise de Football-Association (FECOFA) is one of Africa's oldest, founded in 1919.
The nation's golden era came in the 1960s and 1970s. As the Republic of Congo, they won the inaugural Africa Cup of Nations in 1968. Then, under the name Zaire, they made history at the 1974 FIFA World Cup in West Germany — becoming the first sub-Saharan African nation to compete at a World Cup. Though the group stage results were difficult, the achievement opened the door for African football on the world stage. They also won a second AFCON title in 1974.
After a period of relative difficulty, DR Congo re-emerged in the 21st century as a genuine African power. They reached the AFCON quarter-finals in 2015 and built a squad featuring players with experience in the top European leagues. Yannick Bolasie brought flair and creativity, while Chancel Mbemba provided defensive steel.
The most dramatic chapter came at AFCON 2023 in Ivory Coast. The Léopards went on a breathtaking run through the tournament, defeating powerhouses like Morocco and Egypt to reach the final. Though they lost to hosts Ivory Coast in a memorable final, their campaign captured the hearts of the African continent and announced DR Congo as a major force in modern African football.
