Eswatini is a mountain kingdom in Southern Africa, almost completely surrounded by South Africa and sharing a shorter border with Mozambique. It is one of the last remaining monarchies in Africa, and Swazi culture, music, and royal ceremonies are still a proud part of everyday life.
The administrative capital is Mbabane, high in the mountains, while nearby Lobamba is home to the royal family and parliament. The countryside is green and hilly, with grasslands, forests, and wildlife parks such as Hlane Royal National Park and Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, where rhinos, elephants, zebras, and antelope still roam.
One of the country's most famous celebrations is the Umhlanga Reed Dance, when thousands of young women gather to honour the Queen Mother. Sibebe Rock, a giant granite mountain near Mbabane, is another landmark students love to discover.
In 2018 the country changed its official name from Swaziland to Eswatini, which means "land of the Swazis" in the siSwati language. People speak siSwati and English, and the currency is the lilangeni. Eswatini is a brilliant example of how a country can keep its traditions while welcoming visitors from around the world.
